How to Install Windows 10 on Your PC

UPDATE! If you want to clean install Windows 10 instead of just upgrading, you can follow our new and updated guide to clean installing Windows 10. We definitely recommend going that route.
Before you decide to upgrade your computer, you might want to decide whether or not you actually want to install Windows 10. It’s not necessarily right for everybody — there are still bugs and issues, and we really recommend that people hold off for a few weeks.
 You should not install Windows 10 on your primary PC. Use a test computer or a virtual machine. If you absolutely must install Windows 10 on your regular computer, we highly recommend creating a system image of your entire computer in case you want to easily revert back.

If you haven’t installed Windows 10 on your PC before, you’ll have to perform an upgrade first before you can clean install. If this doesn’t make any sense, that’s because Microsoft never makes licensing easy, even when there’s a free version. Once you’ve performed the upgrade and activated your Windows 10 upgrade on a PC, Microsoft will associate your unique hardware ID with an activated Windows 10 license, and you can reinstall as you see fit. But not until you’ve upgraded Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 and then activated.
Just keep in mind that Windows 10 is only provided for free as an upgrade. You can’t clean install it, there are no keys at this point. Unless you use our clean install workaround.

• Step 1: Download the Windows 10 ISO image from Microsoft’s web site. Alternatively you can download the web installer from the same page and just choose to upgrade your PC, which is the easiest option.
• Step 2: If you are installing on a regular PC with Windows already on it, you’ll be prompted immediately to start the upgrade process. Alternatively, you can burn it to an optical disk or create a bootable USB flash drive. Otherwise, just attach the ISO image using the virtual machine software of your choice (assuming your virtual machine already has Windows 7 or 8 installed).
• Step 3: Install it mostly by clicking the Next button, making sure to choose Upgrade when prompted. If you want to clean install, follow our clean install instructions instead.
• Note: Now that Windows 10 is released, you’re going to need a valid Windows license key for 7, 8, or 8.1 in order to perform the upgrade.

For posterity, here are all of the installation steps if you’re booting from a flash drive, although you could just remember the word “Next” and get through it fine. Just remember to choose Upgrade when prompted unless you’ve previously upgraded and activated Windows 10 on this computer.

When you first boot the computer you’ll see a screen like this one:

Click Next and you’ll be taken to the Install now button screen. Which obviously you should click.

At this point you can choose whether you want to upgrade Windows or install a new custom install. Since we’re recommending that everybody install into a virtual machine or on a test PC, you should select Custom here.
Update: You should probably choose to Upgrade the first time, because the license key might not work otherwise.

At this point you’ll need to pick where to install Windows 10. You might need to delete or create a partition, but if you are using a virtual machine, you can just click Next.

And now it will install.

Once the PC reboots again, you’ll be able to select the settings like whether Windows Updates are enabled (they aren’t allowed to be disabled in the preview). We’d recommend just using the express settings if you are using a test machine — use Custom if you’re really going to use the computer.

And now you can sign into your Microsoft account. We’d recommend using a Microsoft account because otherwise you won’t be able to use half of the new features and you may as well use Linux or stick with Windows 7.

If you’ve setup your account properly you’ll probably be asked to verify it in the middle. We excluded those steps from this article, but they are pretty simple.
Now you’ll be asked how to setup the PC. Since we wanted to test everything as a new computer, we chose to set it up as a new PC instead, but you could copy all your settings from another computer if you wanted to.

Want to use OneDrive? It’s nicely integrated into Windows, so we just left it alone.

New Linux Distro For Programmers And Web Developers

Short Bytes: SemiCode OS is a Linux distribution developed specifically for programmers and web developers. Based on Ubuntu 14.04, it uses the familiar GNOME desktop environment and comes preloaded with a good selection of developer tools. The early beta version, SemiCode OS v0.1, is available for download and testing.

Very often Linux enthusiasts complain regarding the fragmentation due to hundreds of distributions. Each distribution has its own libraries, kernel configuration, pre-installed software, etc. However, the same variety makes Linux unique. Every person can create his/her own Linux distro and customize it.If we take a look at the vast list of various Linux distributions, there are specialized solutions for hackers, power users, artists, and gamers. But, there’s a dearth of distros that claim to serve the unique needs of programmers, probably, because most Linux-based operating systems are customizable and a developers can install all the useful tools in no time.

Having said that, I’m going to tell you about a new Linux distribution that’s focused on programmers and web developers. Named SemiCode OS, this distro is based on Ubuntu Linux.

Privacy:

Sarah uses only your username and doesn’t store your personal information. Apart from that, SemiCode OS tries to respect your privacy by making DuckDuckGo your default search engine.

At the moment, SemiCode OS is in early beta stage. That’s why I won’t advise you to install it on your main machine. However, you can surely try it out on your testing system or virtual machine. You can find the download links here.

Install Windows 7

              

 

 Enter your computer's BIOS. Turn off the computer that you want to install Windows on then turn it back on. When the BIOS screen appears or you are prompted to do so, press Del, Esc, F2, F10, or F9 (depending on your computer’s motherboard) to enter the system BIOS. The key to enter the BIOS is usually shown on the screen.

   Find your BIOS's boot options menu. The boot options menu of your BIOS may vary in location or name from the illustration, but you may eventually find it if you search around.
   

   • If you can't find the boot options menu, search the name of your BIOS (most likely located in the BIOS menu) online for help.

   Select the drive as the first boot device of your computer.
   

   • If your drive doesn't show up as a boot device, then your computer doesn't support it.
   • Although this method may vary among computers, the boot options menu is typically a menu of movable device names where you should set your drive as the first boot device. It can also be a list of devices that you can set the order of their boot on individually. Consult a manual or the internet for help if you're stuck.
3. 
   
   
   Save the changes of the settings. Press the button indicated on the screen or select the save option from the BIOS menu to save your configuration.
4. 
   
   
   Shut off your computer. Either turn off the computer by choosing the shut-down option in your current operating system, or hold the power button until the computer powers off.

   Turn your computer back on. Your computer should enter Windows Setup.
   

   • If your computer asks you if you want to boot from a USB by pressing any key, boot from it. Windows Setup will load.

Once you reach the Welcome screen, un-plug the USB drive and plug in into another USB port on your computer, then continue with the installation.

   Choose your Windows Setup options. Once Windows Setup loads, you'll be presented with a window. Select your preferred language, keyboard type, and time/currency format, then click Next.

   Click the Install Now button.

   Accept the License Terms. Read over the Microsoft Software License Terms, check I accept the license terms, and click Next.

   Select the Custom installation.

    Decide on which hard drive and partition you want to install Windows on. A hard drive is a physical part of your computer that stores data, and partitions "divide" hard drives into separate parts.
    

    • If the hard drive has data on it, delete the data off of it, or format it.
      • Select the hard drive from the list of hard drives.
      • Click Drive options (advanced).
      • Click Format from Drive options.
    • If your computer doesn't have any partitions yet, create one to install Windows on it.
      • Select the hard drive from the list of hard drives.
      • Click Drive options (advanced).
      • Select New from Drive options.
      • Select the size, and click OK.

    Install Windows on your preferred hard drive and partition. Once you've decided on where to install Windows, select it and click Next. Windows will begin installing.and Restarting Windows

Post-Installation
These steps carry off after you have finished installing Windows and your computer has started in Windows 7 Type your username and computer's name and click Next.

   Type your password and click Next. If you don't want a password, leave the text boxes blank and then click Next.

   Enter your product key then click Next. Your product key is located on the case of your Windows 7 disc if you purchased the disc. To skip entering your product key, just click Next, but Windows will run on a 30-day trial, and you'll have to enter a key once the 30 day trial time is up.

   Choose your Windows Update settings.
   

   • Use recommended settings automatically sets update and security settings recommended by Microsoft.
   • Install important updates only configures your computer only to install necessary updates.
   • Ask me later disables your security until you have made a decision.
